In 1742 two Lutherans, Count Nicholas von Zinzendorf and Pastor Heinrich Melchior Muhlenberg, met in a Philadelphia parlor. Their brief and stormy session set American Moravians and Lutherans on separate, sometimes contentious paths. Muhlenberg's is the only version of what happened that night. Until now there has been neither a study if the event's historical, political and theological contexts nor an analysis of Muhlenberg's and Zinzendorf's rhetoric, intentions and disagreements. Dr. Wagner examines the European contexts, the antagonists' religious developments, Pennsylvania politics, and the verbal battle which Zinzendorf and Muhlenberg waged. The book offers readers ways to understand the men, their times, and the controversy. The author also provides understanding of their different yet complimentary visions for the church that may be needed today.
